CAYLA: Youth Leadership Workshop at Horse Sense
Recently, the City of Asheville Young Leaders Academy (CAYLA) came out for a day of leadership development. Students were given an opportunity to discuss what both good and bad leadership means to them, and what good leadership looks like.
Through a series of activities with the horses, the youth were given a chance to try out various leadership styles with the horses. Horses are natural followers, looking for natural leadership. Each youth was given the chance to find their own unique leadership style, and to get feedback from the horses in the process. During the day they practiced leading the horses & their peers, while reading & responding to the non-verbal communication of the horses & other participants. It was a unique and insightful day for these future leaders!
Here's some of the feedback from their experience:
"This experience taught me a lot about adapting to different personalities and/or egos." --Tyler
The horses helped me learn to "try to see someone else's perspective."
"The horses taught me to "stay open-minded & kind." --Andrea
Working with the horses taught me that "I should be more considerate of others."
Working with the horses taught me "how to look at people's body language and [what] that can teach me about how to approach people." --Anice

Horse Sense is honored to work with such an impressive group of
future leaders.
