Description

Communication is the center of successful practice. It starts with introductions and first impressions. It traverses the concepts of trust, respect, presence, and compassion. Failure in any part of this can lead to miscommunication, misdiagnosis, education errors or deficiencies for the patient and potentially malpractice. In fact, on average, 75% of patients complain that their provider(s) don’t communicate well. One third of patients feel that they have not been given the “full story”.

This experiential workshop focuses on the concept of “patient-centered” care. Review the importance of verbal and non-verbal communication in the therapeutic space is highlighted. A focused look at one’s presentation style and how to modify it according to the patient and or family will be reviewed. Boundaries including boundary opening and boundary limiting behaviors and actions will be identified. Finally this workshop will look at balancing technical and cognitive skills with interpersonal skills. No riding and no previous horse experience needed.

Objectives

Upon completion of the activity the participant should be able to:

  • Define patient-centered care
  • Identify five outcomes of effective communication
  • Identify incongruence between verbal and non-verbal communication
  • Learn and/or refresh skills required to be present, focused and mindful with patients/clients, families and other professionals
  • Identify projection and transference
  • Identify the significance of personal and professional boundaries
  • Identify incongruence between intention and behavior
